The legend
Nissan sold the 240SX in the US from 1989 to 1998 as the affordable rear-wheel-drive coupe nobody appreciated at the time. In Japan, the Silvia and 180SX versions became the backbone of the drift scene while it was still being invented in the mountains. Light, balanced, rear-wheel drive, and cheap — it was the perfect formula before anyone knew the formula.
Why drifters still choose the S-chassis
The layout: front-engine, rear-wheel drive with near-perfect weight balance. The S13 and S14 rotate exactly the way you want a drift car to rotate. Modern cars can drift, but few feel this natural doing it.
The aftermarket: three decades of development means every problem has been solved ten times over. Angle kits, coilovers, diffs, engine swaps — the S-chassis has the deepest parts catalog in grassroots drifting.
The price: clean examples have gotten expensive, but a running S13 project is still one of the cheapest real drift cars you can buy.
The culture: the 240SX isn't just a car, it's an aesthetic — pop-ups or aero, loud liveries, the whole late-night highway-runner look. Owning one is a statement. Wearing one is too.
S13 vs S14: the eternal debate
The S13 (1989–1994) is the raw one — pop-up headlights, boxy lines, the purist's choice. The S14 (1995–1998), especially the Kouki with its aggressive front end, is the sleeker, more refined evolution. Drifters will argue about this forever. There is no wrong answer, only wrong attitudes.
